The story behind the Chesapeake Arena becoming an NBA venue is an unusual one in that it “auditioned” for the role. These include early rounds of the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament (2010, 2016), the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament, annual visits by the PBR Rodeo circuit and the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships. In addition to the Thunder games, the Chesapeake Arena has hosted many other major sports events. ![]() The arena seats 18,203 in its basketball configuration, including 3,380 club seats, seven party suites and forty-nine private suites. It opened in 2002 and operated as the Ford Center through 2010, when it became the Chesapeake Energy Arena through a 12-year naming rights agreement. ![]() In that period, the Chesapeake Energy Arena (we will refer to it as the Chesapeake Arena, as that is what the locals call it) has hosted two different franchises.
